Stable Brain Function Depends on the Orbitofrontal Cortex (the "Personality" Region) and on GABA, the Inhibitory Neurotransmitter

Susan Is the GABA you mention the same as the GABA advertised in functional rice products? Products with high GABA content are also more expensive โ€” there must be some real benefit. What makes GABA good for us?

Dr. Lee Yes โ€” exactly the same word. GABA is a neurotransmitter. Broadly, the human nervous system is balanced and regulated by excitatory glutamate and inhibitory GABA. By analogy, GABA is the brake of a car and glutamate is the accelerator. For healthy body and mind, both must be present and balanced. GABA-rich neurons are particularly concentrated in the orbitofrontal cortex, which is also known as a "personality brain" region (Figure 5-12). I just said GABA is like the brake. So what happens if GABA is too low or doesn't function well?

Emily A car without brakes would speed off and crash, causing all kinds of accidents. Are you saying something similar happens to people?
